The dangers of nightshades: Why eating the wrong fruits and vegetables could make pain worse

Nightshades are a group of plants that belong to the Solanaceae family, and this family is consisted of over 2,000 species like tomatoes, eggplants, potatoes and all types of pepper.

Goji berries, ashwagandha blueberries, and huckleberries are not members of this group, but they also contain inflammation-inducing alkaloids. These plants can lead to inflammation because they contain a chemical called solanine, which can irritate the gastrointestinal tract. When this chemical is absorbed into the bloodstream, it will destroy the red blood cells that are responsible for carrying oxygen,

Solanine is a chemical that prevents the breakdown of acetylcholinesterase, which is a neurotransmitter. This can cause this chemical to be accumulated in the spots where there are nerve receptors. This will lead to constant over-stimulation of the Ach receptors. Despite this, the body will not break down these chemicals, nor they are water soluble, so the only way that they are getting out of the body is as alpha-solanine, which is a neurotoxin.

The consumption of nightshades can cause symptoms of aggravated arthritis, and according to some researchers, this condition is often times misdiagnosed in people that are sensitive to nightshades. The alkaloids that are contained inside of the nightshades will affect the metabolism of calcium, removing it from the bones. The calcium will then accumulate in the soft tissues, which will eventually lead to arthritis. This is one of the main reasons why health experts advise patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis or other joint problems, to avoid nightshade foods.

Norman F. Childers, Ph.D., is the founder of the Arthritis Nightshades Research Foundation and he explains that diet is a major factor in the etiology of the surveys about arthritis and that the nightshades can actually lead to arthritis in people that are sensitive to it.

What is more, the elimination of these type of plants from your diet will provide positive effects in cases of leg weakness, reactive airways disease, arthritis-related diseases like rheumatism and lupus, and knee pain.

If you are one of these people, you need to avoid:

  • All types of tomatoes
  • All varieties of peppers like bell pepper, cayenne, paprika, red and green peppers, chili peppers etc.

You also need to avoid the following products:

  • Inflammation and pain remedies that contain capsicum

The three-month challenge

In order to check if the nightshades have a negative impact on your overall health, you need to take this three-month challenge, which essentially means that you need to avoid them in this time period.

Take careful notes of all the symptoms that you experience during that time, including energy loss, stiffness, respiratory issues and headaches. After 90 days, reintroduce these plants to your diet, one at a time.
